How to read the Bible every day.

Tips, tricks, and tools to help you get into the habit of reading the Bible every day, while raising babes!

Let’s be real, mama’s, getting in the habit of reading our bible every day is hard. Quiet time with the Lord is really more like quietISH time with the Lord. RIGHT!? There’s just no promised quiet hour around my house, and I know it’s the same for you. We have these perfectly orchestrated schedules, but there are zero guarantees that they’ll actually work. MOST days my kids go to bed and wake up around the same time. But there are those days when they’re still up at random hours during the night, some nights sleeping in my bed, or up even earlier. I wish there was a magic, promised, quiet hour, but that’s just not real life! When there is no guaranteed quiet time, it makes it really difficult to read, especially reading the Bible.

I’ve tried a lot of different things over the years to be more habitual with my Bible time, some have worked, while others haven’t. One thing that I have found to be true, like anything while raising kids, is it’s always changing. What works this week may not work next week. And, I’ve learned that it’s okay to change the plan to better fit the season I am in with my kids!

So I’ve put together a few tips and tricks that might help you be more successful at reading your Bible every day, like they have me.

1. Schedule the time that you will read your Bible every day.

Making it a part of your daily schedule helps you carve out the time in your day to actually make it happen. It’s great to have the perfect quiet moment where you’re uninterrupted, but one thing we can rely on is the fact that we will be interrupted from time to time. I’ve found that if I keep my expectation is realistic, I’m not as easily frustrated when things don’t go as planned.

2. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you read the Bible every day.

Whether you’re able to give your Bible your full attention, or if you’re distracted here and there, ask Him to speak to you and keep your heart soft. He already knows exactly what your days look like. He also knows how your Bible reading is going to go that day. If you pray and ask for His help, He’ll prepare your heart for whatever might come your way, and He’ll help you see and hear what He has for you in the Word. He can speak to you even while a thousand things are trying to distract you. (Isn’t that encouraging?)

3. Have a plan for what you’re going to read in the Bible every day.

I love having a study to do, it’s consistent and reliable. It takes the guesswork out of what you’re going to read each day, and it holds you accountable to a schedule. Typically we all want to stay on some type of schedule or plan, so we’re more likely to show up and complete the plan for that day if it’s preplanned.

4. Be realistic and flexible.

Remember that you will more than likely be interrupted by your kids while you’re having your Bible time. That’s okay. In fact, I’ve come to learn that it’s kind of awesome. We really should want our kids to see us reading our Bibles and praying. They’ll learn that it’s an important daily habit when they see us doing it. I’ve learned this the hard way… I’ve definitely been frustrated from time to time over the years whenever something or someone has caused an interruption during my Bible time… not my proudest moments. So be realistic!

Also, be flexible. Seasons change. So, we can totally change our plans to fit what the new season holds. Sometimes it’s just the simple fact that our schedule changes. Our Bible reading time can change with it!

5. Don’t overthink it.

The most important part is to just show up and be faithful to the Lord with the process. He’s not looking for a perfect moment with you, He’s just looking for YOU! All that’s required is showing up.

6. Make it enjoyable to read the Bible every day!

Grab your favorite blanket, your favorite Bible, a fun journal, your favorite pens, and enjoy it. I love a good pen, so it adds a little extra joy to my Bible reading time to have my favorites handy. 🙂

Here are a few of my favorite Bible reading tools that make it more enjoyable for me to show up every day with the Lord!

And hands down the best highlighters, here

If you can try these few steps, you’re likely to find that it’s not as difficult to show up for your Bible time every day, even with interruptions. I’d love to hear what works for you in the comments! We can all learn from each other. And remember that I’m here, in the trenches with you, cheering you on!

Thanks, Sarah! I know personally for me, when I realized that I just needed to show up and the Lord would meet me right where I am, it changed my “quiet time!” It made it doable and enjoyable.
